Lifestyles of young people before the Great Depression
Look at the styles of dress. Many of the activities back then mirror what we like to do today. Compare this with the style of dress for swimming, below. My grandparents spent a lot of time at the beach, as did their friends.
i don't have any pictures of this, but apparently my grandmother liked to take a nip now and then. During the prohibition, this would have been difficult. Stories abound in my family about how Blanche (we called her, "Nana") would make bathtub gin. I never knew what that was about. As a child, I used to think she just swirled something around in their bathtub. Apparently that's pretty much how it was done.
"As gin was the predominant drink in the 1920s, many variations were created by mixing cheap grain alcohol with water and flavorings and other agents, such as juniper berry juice and glycerin. In addition, mixing grain alcohol, water, and flavorings in vessels large enough to supply commercial users had to be small enough for the operation to go undetected by the police.
"Many gin cocktails such as Bee's Knees owe their existence to bathtub gin, as they" were also created in order to mask the unpleasant taste."
My grandfather was a wine and grain merchant for a time. I suspect, but have no way to check, that he was the supplier of the grain alcohol that Nana would have used to make her own gin.
Grandma liked to party!
